It may be Snowed In day at Catterick (see Matt’s left field horse racing predictions for 2021 – part 1 for why) but the 1.30 is the race in question here. There is a southern trainer who not only has a 50% (7/14) strike rate when sending runners to Catterick, but he’s 3/4 with chasers at the track. With this being a novice chase, the second part of that stat has to come into the thinking.
We will have free horse racing tips for the other cards on Sunday as well, those coming at Plumpton, Southwell and Fairyhouse. There is an excellent Grade 3 mares chase at Fairyhouse and the Sussex National at Plumpton to look forward to on a decent day of racing. That said, it’s a small field novices chase that is one of the more interesting, so let’s get stuck into who and why!
Jamie Snowdon is not a trainer who ventures to Catterick all that often. When he does, however, the hint needs to be taken, especially when he takes just a single runner with him. A 50% strike rate with all runners at the track becomes 75% from the small sample size of the chasers he has taken to the track.
Thomas Macdonagh is his runner on Sunday in what is in theory a tight-knit contest with just two pounds separating the three runners on official ratings. He relishes testing conditions, probably unlucky to bump into a smart one at Chepstow last time when third. This sharper track at the distance might just help him as he tanked into that contest before getting outstayed by one who looks a regional national horse of the future.
