Cloch Nua hasn’t won since October 2022 and has slipped down to a mark of 58 as a result. This is a cracking mark on the evidence of the gelding’s best form and he could surprise a few.
Stella Barclay’s five-year-old has run some fair races in defeat, including when third by a length off a 7lb higher mark at Wetherby in May 2023. The 7f trip wouldn’t have suited last time out and the return to the extended mile here will help.
His last win came over course and distance and his current rating is 2lb lower. Clearly his more recent efforts suggest he has plenty to find but the handicapper has responded accordingly and he has to have a major chance if reproducing his best form.
She’s A Rocca is unbeaten in two starts at Southwell and one of those wins came over this trip off a 4lb lower mark back in June 2022. The other came over an extended 2m4f on her penultimate start and she was entitled to need the run when pulling up at Market Rasen when last seen. Ground conditions will definitely suit and a return to winning ways shouldn’t be ruled out.
