It has been a good summer so far for both Joe Tizzard and Brendan Powell. Despite not having a large number of runners, the pair’s strike-rates has been exceptional. This is certainly the case at Newton Abbot where Tizzard has has a strike-rate of 67 per cent and Powell’s is 57 per cent. They’re unstoppable here recently so it’s perhaps significant that they combine at the Devon track with three runners on Monday. These three runners combine to form a massive 1,546-1 treble. Holnest Pound (33-1, bet365) will certainly need to improve on what we’ve seen from him so far if he’s to get his head in front. The gelding’s sire was a hurdle winner so it seems as if he’s a proper National Hunt type. These types of horses tend to improve with racing so hopefully a better performance is on the cards. Tries a shorter trip here having pulled-up over an extended 2m5f last time.
L’Air Du Vent (6-1, bet365) isn’t the easiest to train but he has plenty of ability and is a decent horse on his day. Despite being the outsider of the field, he has to be considered dangerous off this very low mark of 114. His novice chase win at Exeter in November 2020 is rock solid form and if returning to that level of form he’d destroy this opposition.
Helford River (11-2, bet365) looked like a nice chasing prospect last summer. He won two of his three chase starts including one here over 2m5f. The drop down to an extended two miles is an intriguing move. This gelding is a better horse than he’s been showing lately and perhaps coming back to a track at which he has won before can inspire a return to form.
