Britain was hit with a deluge of rain on Thursday, flooding the area of Newmarket and its gallops. With that in mind, the going is going to be soft at Goodwood and Newmarket for the first time this summer so horses won’t be used to it. We take a look at the horses who should relish these conditions on Saturday.
Oo De Lally ticks a lot of boxes in this handicap. The gelding won here at Goodwood last year on heavy ground off a mark of 101 and he is only 2lb higher in the weights now. His best run this year came on good to soft and he has only raced on better ground either side of that. A big run is expected.
It’s a surprise to see Mo Celita as big as 20s when writing this piece, especially with Frankie Dettori booked for the ride. The filly has been poor in two starts on good ground this year but all of her best form is in the mud. A bounce back to form is very likely in our book.
Jadoomi is without doubt a lover of the mud and now with optimum conditions, he should be able to put it right up to the hot favourite. The gelding op he had clearly worked as he came back better than ever with a Listed win in France and this front runner could be hard to catch.
Nahanni hasn’t been seen in the mud too often but there is no question that the son of Frankel will handle it. He made a good horse look like nothing when running out a nine length winner at Leicester on soft in April and the mud might bring back his spark.
Secret Shadow is likely to go off a pretty short price as the Camelot filly adores the mud. All of her wins have come on soft or heavy, and she was beaten less than a length over course and distance on good in May, ground that she wouldn’t have liked. She could be very well treated.
