The Flat is back! Liam Bramall fancies a 16-1 shot to run a huge race in the Lincoln 💪

Doncaster Lincoln

Saturday marks the return of the turf Flat season with its traditional curtain raising meeting at Doncaster. The SBK Lincoln Handicap is the big race of the day and it’s always ferociously competitive as trainers look to make a profitable start to the season by winning this £100,000 event. This race has been a graveyard for favourites of late with only one favourite obliging in the last 10 years. It could therefore be wise to select some at bigger prices to give yourself some each-way possibilities. Here is one outsider to consider at a big price.

‘It’s rare for a horse of his age to have such an unexposed profile’

Cheveley Park capped off another good campaign with their jumpers by being crowned top owner at last week’s Cheltenham Festival. They look to have a good chance of getting off to a flyer at the start of Flat season. The William Haggas-trained Ametist ended last season by finishing third in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket. The handicapper handed him a 2lb rise for that effort which was perhaps a little harsh but it shouldn’t be too unmanageable.

There should be plenty of scope for improvement from this five-year-old who has had just eight career starts. It’s rare for a horse of his age to have such an unexposed profile especially with such a prolific record. He’s a four-time winner and has finished third twice. A horse who has won or placed in 75 per cent of its starts just can’t be ignored in a race of this quality.

The going is currently good-to-soft but with warm and dry forecasts between now and Saturday, you can expect the track to dry out further. Ametist’s form suggests that he wants quicker ground so the more it dries out the better his chances will be.
