Let’s take a closer look at this big gamble in more detail below…

6.40 Newcastle

Ten runners will go to post for this Class 5 handicap and it is easy to make a case for at least half the field. Roger Fell’s Kapono is the one that is coming for market support, backed from 11-1 into 7-1 in places thus far.

The last time this horse ran at this level was back in October where he finished second over course and distance from 1lb higher. Prior to that he won in this grade so now dropping back to this level, he is of huge interest.

Trading as short as 2.66 in a much better race than this last time out in an 0-85, he carries top weight in this 0-75 so will face much lesser opposition. In form Jason Hart is booked for the ride which is another big plus.

He boasts a record of 1st, 6th, 1st, 2nd at this venue in Class 5 company and this is Roger Fell’s favourite hunting ground. With 31 career winners here, his next best track is Southwell where he has saddled 23 career winners.

Everything looks set for a huge run and the 8-1 might not last much longer.
