It might not be the most attractive card in the world at Wincanton Racecourse on Tuesday but it is always a place where soft ground horses thrive. We are guaranteed pretty testing conditions and it’s always wise to go with horses who have form in the mud and who stay further as it is a stiff track too. Let’s take a look at the three who I think could go well on Tuesday.
Sam Thomas’ Lump Sum is likely to go off a short price for the opening 1m7f Novices’ Hurdle, but he should win again. The son of Authorized won his debut bumper at Bangor on soft ground last season, before finishing third to the potentially smart The Doyen Chief at Hereford in April. He bolted up at Ffos Las on hurdling bow on heavy and will be hard to stop.
Sam’s Amour could be the one to side with in the extended 3m Novices’ Handicap Hurdle in what looks a trappy affair. The lightly-raced runner is still a maiden after six starts but has run well in both starts in handicaps so far this season, third in a mares’ handicap hurdle at Fontwell when last seen. She handles the ground and the longer trip should suit.
It’s fantastic to see Polly Gundry with a potential stable star in the form of Don’t Rightly Know, who bolted up by 16 lengths in an Exeter novices’ hurdle a couple of weeks ago, breezing through her race in the manner of a smart horse. The mare is very lightly raced for her age and that was her first run in 709 days, so there should be more to come.
