6.40 Wolverhampton

It was a pretty quiet night and morning on the betting front. However, at 9am this morning all hell broke loose in the 6.40pm at Wolverhampton. SHANGHAI ROCK has been backed from an overnight price of 11-1 right into 10-3 in places. That takes quite a bit of money and it seems to be win money going on at the moment.

A well bred Dark Angel colt, the two-year-old is having his first start at this venue tonight. He was a winner at Windsor in October when sent off the 11-4 favourite. Landing a competitive Class 5 handicap in good style, he relished the soft ground on that occasion. Things will happen a lot quicker tonight so he will need to show more to land this from a 3lb higher mark.

The main concern for this runner is the fact he has been well beaten in two starts on the All Weather. He finished last of the seven runners at Newcastle last month. Although he ran a better race at Kempton when last seen, he still never figured. The handicapper has released his grip somewhat as he now races off 71 having raced off a mark of 77 at Newcastle.

Richard Hannon is a shrewd trainer and this horse still has very low mileage on the clock so he could improve massively yet. It is hard to make a solid case for him judged on his last two efforts. However, if the form book was always right, wouldn’t we all be rich living in the Caribbean? This is a large, interesting gamble.
