William Haggas has been incredibly selective with the horses he sends to Newcastle. So far this season, the trainer has sent 21 runners up from his Newmarket base. Of these runners, eight have won with 19 finishing in the first four. This phenomenal strike-rate is unignorable and it suggests the sole runner heading to Tyneside on Wednesday will be going there with every chance. The length of the journey alone justifies the trainer’s selectiveness and implies a level of confidence. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Qoya (7-2, William Hill) is a lightly raced filly with just four career starts to date. She showed improvement and the promise of further progression to come on handicap debut at Windsor last time out. Despite finishing sixth, she ran better than the bare result suggests.
The way she kept on at the finish over an extended 1m3f on a flat track suggested the extra furlong and a stiff finish will benefit. A consequence of that effort last time out is that the handicapper has lowered her rating by 2lb which can only help.
It looks like she’ll be winning sooner rather than later and would have learned plenty on handicap debut, enabling her to take a big step forward here. Even if Wednesday isn’t the day, she could be one to keep an eye on going forward. The fact that Haggas is sending her to Newcastle looks significant and there’s undoubtedly plenty more to come.
