Owen’s Outsiders: 33-1 and 18-1 Glorious Goodwood Day 3 tips

Owen's Outsiders

The third day of Glorious Goodwood is upon us. The feature contest is the Group 1 Nassau Stakes, with the fillies and mares taking centre stage. Breeders’ Cup winner Audarya attempts to return to winning ways, but Prix de Diane winner Joan Of Arc and Lockinge second Lady Bowthorpe will provide stern resistance.

We’ll have horse racing tips for all the action, including the five races live of ITV Racing. For me, it’s another chance to try and find an outsider winner. I’ve found three horses who are set to out-run their prohibitive odds and you can find all the details below.

2.25 Goodwood – Richmond Stakes

This year’s Richmond Stakes is a fascinating affair and I’m left scratching my head as to why Gis A Sub (14-1) is the trailer in the market. A 140,000gns purchase, he’s related to some useful types and was narrowly denied on debut at York.

He built on that performance by winning at Pontefract, defeating the subsequent July Stakes third in a superb performance. That form reads extremely well and given that the July Stakes second, Asymmetric, is the market leader, I’m unsure why Gis A Sub has been discounted so heavily.

A strong-travelling type, he’ll be perfect for Goodwood and a dry Thursday is just what he needs. He should be able to lead in this line-up and if they do afford him some rope early, Kevin Stott won’t be coming back to them late on.

4.10 Goodwood – Goodwood Racecourse Patrons Nursery Handicap

Showing plenty of ability in three opening runs, Aldbourne (33-1) has an excellent chance of breaking his maiden for the in-form Andrew Balding team. Well beaten on debut, he stepped up significantly on that run when fifth at Salisbury over six furlongs.

He shaped as though he’d relish a step up to seven furlongs, but he didn’t get that chance to prove that at Epsom last time. He hung left-handed throughout the straight and that effort is best upgraded, given the way he kept on late.

Now making his handicap debut off a mark of 72, he can surely make a big dent off an attractive rating. Conditions will be perfect for him and the booking Hollie Doyle can only be seen as a positive, given how well she’s riding this week.

5.20 Goodwood – World Pool Handicap

He disappointed at Windsor last time, but excuses can be made for Rebel At Dawn (18-1) and he’s worth another try. Prior to that effort, he had finished a brilliant sixth in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse at Royal Ascot, despite racing on ground far too soft for him.

That sort of form gives him a huge chance in this line-up and bar that run at Windsor last time, he’s been thoroughly reliable in 2021. He regains the services of Ben Curtis, who has ridden him many of his better efforts, and his high cruising speed makes him the perfect sprinter for Goodwood.

Karl Burke’s string are in excellent form and if he does bounce back from that underwhelming recent run, his prior form will put him straight into the action.
