Owen’s Outsiders: 33-1, 16-1 and 14-1 Glorious Goodwood Day 1 tips

Owen's Outsiders

The beginning of five days of fantastic, Day 1 of Glorious Goodwood is upon us. The feature race in the Goodwood Cup, as Stradivarius looks for a record-extending fifth win the in the Group 1 contest. He’ll face formidable opponents, however, in the form of Trueshan and Spanish Mission.

We also have the small matter of two Group 2 races, the Vintage and Lennox Stakes. The first five races will be live on the ITV main channel and we’ll have horse racing tips for all five. As always, I’m looking for some big outsiders to start the week! At Royal Ascot, I ended Day 1 with a 33-1 winner and, finger’s crossed, I can have similar success at Goodwood! Find my selections and analysis below.

1.50 Goodwood – Unibet “You’re On” Chesterfield Cup Handicap

A winner at Epsom four starts ago, this type of circuit really plays to the strengths of VICTORY CHIME (33-1). A course and distance winner back in 2018, he’s perhaps weighted to near his best at present, but two recent runs at Ascot and York are forgivable on balance.

He runs for the in-form Ralph Beckett yard, who have won with eight of their last 30 runners, and he was placed at Epsom in June off today’s mark of 102. He was no match for the empathic winner, but it was still a likeable performance in a competitive heat.

A speedy sort, he doesn’t need to lead and is likely to sit handy in this field. That will leave him in the perfect position throughout and with softer conditions of no real concern to him, he’s a striking option in the opener.

4.10 Goodwood – Back To Goodwood Handicap

Two recent runs at Newcastle and Royal Ascot have been disappointing, but SUNDAY SOVERIGN (20-1) is capable of far better than that. Running better than the bare result on return at York, he went down by less than a length over the same course and distance on his next start.

Those two aforementioned blowouts at Newcastle and Royal Ascot were a long way below that standard, but they’re worth forgiving. Goodwood should play to his strengths, given he likes to race prominently, and the rain is another positive to his chances.

He doesn’t have the best of draws, but he has the speed to overcome that and he’s likely to be in the vanguard throughout. Off a tempting mark of 96, he has an excellent each-way chance under Silvestre De Sousa.

5.20 Goodwood – World Pool EBF Fillies’ Handicap

Winning two of his last three starts, CRAZY LUCK (14-1) can bounce back from a poor run at Newmarket last time. Prior to that flop, she had impressed with wins at Chester and Newbury, beating a subsequent winner on the latter occasion.

It’s difficult to find excuses for her defeat behind Gellhorn at Newmarket last time, but perhaps the ground was a shade on the quick side. A mark of 79 shouldn’t be the issue and the rain that has come down is in her favour.

She meets Gellhorn on four-pound better terms today and with Rod Millman’s string among the winners, she can bounce back to form when it matters under John Egan.
