Monster gamble: Thurles runner smashed into 9-1 from 33-1 on Thursday 📉

They love a big gamble in Ireland and there’s yet another underway at Thurles on Thursday. One runner in the final race of the day has been absolutely smashed in the betting. The horse in question was 33-1 on Wednesday evening and is now available at a best price of 9-1. Despite not showing a great deal on it’s debut, the market is backing the horse to run a big one. 5.00 Thurles

Onehellofagetaway (9-1, Paddy Power) made his debut in one of many bumpers at the Punchestown Festival. He was well supported that day, going off at 8-1 but could only manage to beat one rival home. It’s fair to say he was tenderly handled that, probably with an eye on the future. Weakening quickly in the last two furlongs, he was minded after that.

Massive improvement will clearly be needed here, if he’s to get off the mark. This race is probably not as hot as one at Punchestown but plenty more is still required. It would be reasonable to expect progress here with the benefit of that experience but it’s difficult to say how much we’ll see here.

A couple of his half-siblings have won bumpers or Flat races so the evidence is there in the pedigree that he’s capable of winning a race like this. Hopefully he doesn’t take after his dam however, as she was well beaten in two bumpers.

Strong market support can be a huge indicator that a horse is going to run well, especially in Ireland. The sustained nature of the support for this horse suggests it would be unwise to rule him out. He’ll need to be fully fit to defy his 289-day absence and get off the mark at the second time of asking.
