Major market mover: Group 3 runner backed into 6/1 from 25/1 at the Curragh

Even So wins the Irish Oaks

Flat racing returns to the Curragh on Monday and that news will be very exciting to some racing fans. Likely to be a highly competitive meeting, the conditions will be very testing for the Curragh’s curtain-raiser. The €100,000 Irish Lincolnshire and the Group 3 Park Express Stakes are the card’s highlights.

It’s the latter of those that has an added dimension of interest as one runner has been the subject of sustained market support throughout the morning. Available at 25/1 the previous evening, the horse in question is just 6/1 at time of writing. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Joseph Murphy’s Alpheratz is the major market mover and the three-year-old filly is thoroughly unexposed. She’s had just two starts to date and already has a heavy ground victory to her name. We should find out plenty more about this horse here but she really could be anything.

Plenty went wrong for her on debut but she still managed to finish second. The filly got off to a slow start, raced keenly, was short of room at a key stage and still managed to place, despite showing signs of greenness on top of that.

It was therefore not much of a surprise that she got off the mark over an extended mile at Gowran next time out. Conditions will be similar here and she should get through the mud better than most yet again. There are three three-year-olds in the field and they receive a very substantial allowance of 17lb from the older fillies and mares, which could make the difference.

Improvement will obviously be needed if she’s to cope with the sharp step up in grade but Murphy’s filly is entitled to find plenty and the best is probably yet to come.
