Jockey with 40 per cent strike-rate at Ripon rides huge-priced runner Monday

Ripon Racecourse

Shane Gray would not be the first jockey that comes to mind when you are thinking of a jockey with a great strike-rate. However, the man has a brilliant return at Ripon Racecourse in 2021, with four winners from his 10 rides at the track. That is a 40 per cent strike-rate and he looks set to enhance that return on Monday with two rides at the course. One of those rides is on a newcomer in a maiden that could open up a huge price. The other is a last time out winner who could go in again.

Trainer Ann Duffield is in great form with three winners from her last eight runners and she runs Charlesishere in this contest. This is a maiden over a mile and the horse is having his racecourse debut. The Charm Spirit gelding was a cheap 5,000 gns yearling and is a half-brother to several winners, including smart stayer Urban Fox. His dam was also a winner over middle distances so the mile should be spot on as a test first time out. Whether he will be fit enough or not is remain to be seen but there is no doubt he will be a big price.

Without doubt the best chance of the day for Shane is Mr Trevor in the last, again for Ann Duffield. The three-year-old Kodi Bear gelding responded well to pressure when getting on top late on at Thirsk this month. That was on soft ground and there should be some juice in the ground here so conditions will suit. A 3lb rise in the weights seems fair and he should give his running once again.
