Jockey who has never tasted defeat has one ride at Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton Sprint

A jockey that has an unbeaten record on the line is quite a rare thing. Most apprentices never win at the first time of asking and when they do it is exceptionally rare.

What is even more rare is a jockey winning his first two rides. That brings us to the talented up-and-coming rider Jonny Peate, a jockey that could be going places fast.

Ride 1

Jonny had his first ride for trainer Mark Johnston in an apprentice handicap at Wolverhampton at the end of January. For a jockey that had no racecourse experience, he gave Coupe De Champagne an incredible ride.

Held up in rear and very keen early doors, Jonny made good headway between horses and got hampered approaching the 2f pole. He switched right and went 2nd over 1f out, before going on to lead inside final furlong. Brilliant ride.

Ride 2

Sent off at odds of 18-1 at Chelmsford, little was expected of Swooper, trainer by Robert Cowell. However, Jonny Peate had other ideas and it was yet again another excellent piece of horsemanship.

The horse didn’t break too well, edging right slightly leaving the stalls. He was soon close-up travelling very smoothly and was nudged out to lead before final furlong, scoring cosily.

Ride 3

Jonny will yet again take the ride on Coupe De Champagne for Mark Johnston on Monday evening. Running in the 7.10pm at Wolverhampton, he is back aboard after the horse finished 4th at Lingfield two weeks ago.

The horse will need a strong pace up front to aim at and could get it from George Boughey’s Mirage Mac. If they go hard up top, nothing will travel better than this boy in the closing stages.
