‘It’s game over for the high numbers’ – Three low drawn horses to watch at Chester

Chester Case

It’s Day 1 of the May Festival at Chester on Wednesday and there’s one factor that needs to be considered as a priority. The draw bias at the Cheshire track is infamous and it doesn’t matter if there are five runners or 14. In a sport where tiny margins can change the result, the severe bias can make all the difference.

It’s game over for the high numbers so we’ve picked out four runners with a low draw that can make the most of their advantage. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

1.30 Chester

Beyond Borders has the best seat in the house in stall one and Karl Burke’s colt usually races up with the pace. A fast start will be crucial as there will be plenty of takers for a prominent rail spot but that shouldn’t be a problem. The heavy ground got the better of him when a well beaten second at Pontefract last month and the quicker conditions here will undoubtedly be of assistance.

2.35 Chester

Kings Merchant is particularly interesting on handicap debut here and won his maiden in good style at Wolverhampton when last seen. The handicapper has responded with a 4lb rise and a mark of 75 looks pretty workable. Also drawn in stall one, Oisin Murphy is an eye-catching jockey booking and it would be no surprise to see a big run from this son of Bated Breath.

4.45 Chester

Way To Dubai was pretty useful in Germany for Andreas Wohler, winning three times over a mile and 1m1f. Charlie Fellowes’ five-year-old is clearly adaptable however as his best run in Britain to date came over 6f. Stall three is a very nice draw and the handicapper is beginning to ease his mark, which can only be a good thing. It surely won’t be long before he gets his head in front on these shores and this is a good opportunity to do so.
