“Her horses come to life in January” – Trainer could land 64-1 double at Catterick

Research and knowledge can be key in the world of horse racing. Some trainers blow hot and cold at certain times of the year. For example, Venetia Williams loves it in the winter but may be a lot quieter in the spring and summer. We have found a trainer that excels in the month of January. She has made sure that it is no fluke either because the month of January has been her most successful for five years running. The trainer in question is Sue Smith and she is definitely worth following for the next couple of weeks.

January is the month where she turns things around. In the five Januaries from 2016-2020, the yard were 36/133, operating at an incredible 27-per-cent. That also amounted to a level stakes profit of +£71.99. On top of that, she has a 22-per-cent strike rate at Catterick racecourse, the best tally at any track she has had more than four runners at. She runs two horses on the card tomorrow, though sadly not in the big race which she won four years on the bounce from 2016-2019.

Kauto D’Amour is Sue’s first runner of the day and she also owns this horse herself. This horse finished off last season in cracking form over hurdles, winning at Newcastle off a rating of 104 the highlight. He has been nowhere near his best over fences and hurdles so far in this campaign, well beaten into sixth over 25f here in December. Still with low mileage on the clock and the booking of Ryan Mania a big plus, he should strip much fitter here.

Arguably her best chance of the pair, Flamboyant Joyaux is a very consistent runner and this is a great opportunity to get his head in front again. He ran very well in his last three starts over fences and now reverts back to the smaller obstacles off a very favourable mark. The horse has run five times since November so fitness certainly won’t be a problem and he was well supported when last seen.
