It’s been a tough period for Newton Abbot recently and they’ve been forced to cancel several meetings due to the weather. They’ll be racing at the Devon track on Wednesday but conditions are set to be very testing, with the going officially described as heavy. Some runners should cope with the conditions better than others so we’ve selected four such horses to follow. Have a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Fast Buck has been badly out of form for a while but the return to heavy ground will be a big help. This 10-year-old has two heavy ground successes to his name and has only failed to make the frame once in five starts on it. Jane Williams’ gelding was victorious off a 4lb higher mark back in January and a return to winning ways shouldn’t be ruled out.
Major Fortune was very progressive in handicaps last season and can pick up where he left off for his in-form trainer. Unbeaten in two starts on heavy, he’s currently rated 6lb higher than when beaten a nose at Ayr last time out and further improvement is anticipated.
Astronomic View did connections proud last season and was admirably consistent upon switching to handicaps. Sue Gardner’s gelding has finished in the first three in all four starts on heavy and managed to win a bumper at Exeter back in 2022. A wide margin winner off a 6lb lower mark at Warwick on his penultimate start, he’s entitled to run another big race.
Knowwhentoholdem won a competitive handicap in good style on heavy at Newbury in March and wasn’t beaten far when fourth on debut for this yard at Wetherby. A 2lb higher mark should be pretty manageable and this lightly raced handicapper can progress if taking well to fences.
