‘He can pick up the pieces’ – One outsider for every day of the Cheltenham Festival

The Cheltenham Festival kicks off on Tuesday and the four-day extravaganza should be yet another good one. There are a lot of very short favourites in the ante-post markets thus far but there’s no such thing as a certainty at Cheltenham. With this in mind, we’ve selected an outsider at substantial odds for each day of the Festival. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Day 1

Arkle Challenge Trophy

Master Chewy is rated 5lb higher than JPR One, despite finishing fourth behind him at Lingfield last time out. He looked a little flat that day and he’s clearly better than that. Beating a subsequent Grade 1 winner at Kempton before that, a fast run race on good to soft ground would be an ideal test for him. Ruby Walsh also tipped him each-way for this recently and there are few better judges.

Day 2

Coral Cup

Ballyadam tends to save his best for Cheltenham and his two fifth-place finishes in the last two renewals of the County Hurdle have really supported the idea that the Coral Cup will suit. He doesn’t appear to be quite pacey enough to truly trouble the principles over that 2m1f and three miles looked too far at Leopardstown over Christmas. Now rated 1lb lower than last year, he’s capable of running a huge race here.

Day 3

Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle

Casa No Mento has looked like a very smart mare since switching to hurdles. She was an easy winner at Market Rasen on her debut over hurdles and looked even more impressive under a penalty at Hereford next time. Her second to Queen’s Gamble in a Listed race next time is rock-solid form and she could run a huge race at a massive price if lining up.

Day 4

Cheltenham Gold Cup

Corach Rambler has a fantastic record at Cheltenham and has won the Ultima for the last two years. When the race begins to reach its conclusion and the non-stayers fall away, this Grand National winner will be there to pick up the pieces. He deserves his place in the line-up and there’s nothing in this race with deeper stamina reserves than him.
