Greatwood Gold Cup big-race verdict: ‘How he is as big as 14-1 is beyond me’ 🤷‍♂️ 🏆

San Benedeto taking the last in the Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury 2019

‘This should be run at a proper gallop’

A typically competitive renewal which Amoola Gold should get run to suit. With Glen Forsa and Paint The Dream generally liking to get on with things, this should be run at a proper gallop which is ideal.

He hinted at a return to form at Warwick last month, keeping on well to the line over this trip. He has slipped two pounds for that effort, just a couple of pounds above his last winning mark but with Jack Andrews taking five pounds off with his claim.

Placed in two of his three previous runs at Newbury, he is generally a consistent type in these handicaps so looks a solid each way price for this to drop right for him late on. How he is 14-1 is beyond me! – Matt Newman

‘There could be bundles of improvement to come’

Senior Citizen certainly isn’t the best handicapped horse in the field but there could be bundles of improvement to come. He is now 10lb higher than when fourth in this race last year.

However, he was beaten just three and a half lengths on that occasion despite hanging left all the way up the straight. The handicapper has been rather harsh, raising him another 5lb for finishing second in the Grand Sefton at Aintree when last seen in November.

Mind you, he was 12 lengths clear of the third so there is clearly more scope for progression. Another important factor is this horse always tends to run well fresh and with that in mind, it is no surprise to see him near the head of the market. He should be involved in the finish here. – Adrian Wall
