Frankie Dettori makes big switch for the St Leger and the price won’t last 😮

Frankie Dettori’s farewell tour is beginning to reach its conclusion and there aren’t many big fixtures left on the British Flat calendar. The final classic of the season, the St Leger, takes place at Doncaster on Saturday and it’s Dettori’s final chance for another English classic.

John & Thady Gosden have three very good chances, including race favourite Gregory. Dettori had been due to ride Gregory but has made a dramatic last minute switch as the final declarations were announced. You can check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

3.35 Doncaster

Arrest (4-1, William Hill) has been ridden by Dettori in all four starts so far this season and the pair have been victorious twice. He won the Chester Vase in very soft ground on seasonal debut, beating Adelaide River by over six lengths. That horse has franked the form well, having finished second in two Group 1s before winning a Group 3 last weekend.

Two very disappointing efforts followed, especially when favourite for the Derby at Epsom. Finishing down the field that day, he never looked dangerous. He was equally disappointing at Royal Ascot next time and was again beaten by a wide margin.

The Gosdens did a wonderful job of getting him back to somewhere near his best at Newbury in Group 3 company last time and the trip here will definitely suit. It’s likely that the ground will have some cut in it and that’s another massive positive, judging by his dominant win at Chester. This looks like a highly competitive renewal and improvement will be needed but it’s clear why Dettori has made the switch.
