‘Conditions will take some getting’ – Heavy ground horses at Punchestown on Sunday

Conditions are set to be very testing at Punchestown on Sunday which means it will be hard work to get through the ground. This wouldn’t be to every horse’s liking and with that in mind, we’ve picked out three runners with proven records on heavy ground. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

1.35 Punchestown

Willie Mullins’ Mister Policeman won on heavy at Fairyhouse in November but he looked in trouble a long way out and didn’t particularly enjoy it. With that in mind, Irish Blaze might have a good chance. Cian Collins’ gelding forged clear when winning a novice chase at Down Royal over the extended two miles on heavy ground and he will love these conditions.

2.35 Punchestown

Gordon Elliott has won the Listed Grand National Trial Handicap Chase four times in the last six year, and Dunboyne has to be of serious interest with proven form on heavy ground. He can be very hit or miss, as seen when pulled up in the Thyestes when last seen, but he was beaten a short head in the Thyestes a year prior on heavy and was fourth in the Kim Muir last March on soft.

3.05 Punchestown

Moving on to the 2m Listed hurdle and Joseph O’Brien’s Boldog must hold a serious chance. This horse won a bumper at Hexham when trained by Stuart Crawford, and he looked really impressive when bolting up in a Tramore maiden hurdle on stable and hurdles debut on New Year’s Day. He wil be given a positive ride and with no ground concerns has every chance.
