Campanelle claims Prix Morny for America as Dettori’s French success continues

Campanelle wins the Queen Mary

It was another successful day for Frankie Dettori in France, as Campanelle claimed the Prix Morny for Wesley Ward.

Campanelle runs riot

Winning on both Palace Pier and Mishriff seven days ago, Frankie Dettori‘s French raid continued in style. Campanelle, trained by Wesley Ward, was a hugely impressive winner of the Queen Mary back in June. She scored despite a poor passage and as a result, was sent off 2/1 favourite for the Group 1 Prix Morny.

She took the step up in grade in her stride, winning decisively under a confident Dettori. Up with the pace throughout, she found generously for pressure and forged clear in the final 200 metres when asked to stretch.

Options have well and truly opened for Ward’s filly, who booked her ticket for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint as a result. Completely unexposed and unbeaten, the sky is surely the limit for this exciting sprinter.

Nando Parrado ended up with the runners-up birth and his run was extremely encouraging. Outpaced when Campanelle went clear, he rallied in the final furlong and looks potentially set for a step up in distance.

Nazeef falls flat in the Prix Jean Romanet

Winning six of her eight starts, including at Group 1 level two starts ago, Nazeef was understandably a warm order to provide Dettori with a Group 1 double just over an hour later. After a third in the Nassau Stakes, there was little in the field to oppose her on paper.

It didn’t work out that way, however, as despite travelling powerfully into the race, she found little for pressure and weakened in tame fashion. Despite staying on well on her first try of ten furlongs at Glorious Goodwood, perhaps soft ground at Deauville pushed her stamina too far.

The race winner was still trained in Britain, however, as Audarya claimed the race for James Fanshawe. Winning a Class 2 handicap at Newcastle on her most recent start, it was a big step forward on her fourth start over the ten-furlong distance.
