British-based trainer sends one horse on 638-mile round trip for Curragh handicap ⛴️

British raiders to Ireland are certainly common. Probably not common enough, but there is certainly nothing unusual about it. Frankie Dettori will ride Equilateral in the Group 2 sprint for Charlie Hills, while Karl Burke runs Last Crusader in the race.

What is far more interesting though is the fact that Yorkshire based trainer John Quinn sends one horse over to run in a Curragh handicap. It is a handicap worth winning for sure as there’s a fantastic pot on offer but this horse is the most interesting British raider of the day from a punting point of view.

2.35 Curragh

The horse in question is Mr Wagyu who comes over to represent Britain in the Paddy Power Scurry over 6f, a premier handicap.  This seven-year-old has had a long career but has never ventured outside of Britain, until now. He won a valuable sprint at Epsom in June and ran a cracker from a much higher mark (101) when fourth to Rohaan in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot.

Beaten just two lengths on the day, he is more than deserving of his chance in this and he can run off 1lb lower over in Ireland. He has never won off a mark in the 100s but oddly enough he seems to be in the form of his life despite having had a busy career. John Quinn knows the time of day; without doubt one of the shrewdest trainers one would find.

Connections seem to be trying to strike while the iron is hot and he is a fascinating contender!
