57% strike-rate jockey over fences at Killarney last season has single 20-1 ride on Sunday

Irish eyes will be watching the Classic trials at Leopardstown on Sunday but Killarney holds an interesting angle. Last season this jockey was 4/7 when riding in a chase at the track, having one ride over the bigger obstacles on the Sunday card there.

5.00 Killarney – J O C Metal Fabrication Handicap Chase

Darragh O’Keeffe is the jockey in question, a 28% strike rate at Killarney in his career across all race make this his most successful track. He is 7/16 in his career in chases here, riding winners at a 44% clip for a level stakes profit of £19.25 so last season was not a one off.

His sole chase ride on Sunday is on Allardyce in the 5.00 for trainer Edward O’Grady. Any rain will do his chances some good, four times a winner, twice on yielding and twice on heavy. His two handicap wins over fences have come from 108 and 116 so his current mark of 103 is well within his capabilities if he can channel that old level.

The change of headgear to blinkers saw him finish closer than he had for nine starts despite looking to find that sharp test at Kilbeggan on the quick side. A mistake two out stopped his momentum but he picked a few off on the run-in to suggest that perhaps he is coming back to form.
