Adrian Wall looks ahead to the opening day of the York Ebor Meeting on Wednesday the 18th of August. The feature race of the day is the Group 1 Juddmonte International where Aidan O’Brien’s Love looks to get back on track. Adrian has picked out two tips at 40-1 and 33-1 who should both outrun their large odds. Make sure that you check out our free ITV Racing tips which are uploaded to the site every evening.
Six of the last seven winners of the opening handicap on the card has been won by a horse that went off double-digit odds. With that in mind, Snazzy Jazzy (advised at 33-1) is of interest with top rider Oisin Murphy in the plate. The former Ayr Silver Cup winner and Group 3 winner in France ran well here behind Winter Power in Listed company when fourth last month. He was a close-up sixth at Ascot recently and has been dropped 2lb for that. Laurence Mullaney’s horse might not be far away in this.
If the betting market is to be believed, then it will be a match between Love and Mishriff in the Juddmonte International. However, I think there is a forgotten horse in the pack that could spring a bit of a surprise if on a going day. Trainer Kevin Ryan has hit a purple patch and with the string in such good order, Juan Elcano (advised at 40-1) can outrun his odds. Beaten just three lengths in last year’s 2000 Guineas, he won a Listed race at Ascot on his seasonal debut. He followed that up with a cracking run here in the Group 2 York Stakes last time, beaten a head by Bangkok. Of course he will have to improve on that form but he had a couple of very smart types behind that day.
