16-1 & 12-1 Tips: Big-race verdict for the Ebor handicap at York

Muntahaa and Jim Crowley winning the Ebor at York 2018

The Ebor is one of the feature handicaps of the season and the 2021 edition looks another hugely competitive renewal. Our tipsters have taken a look over the ITV Racing feature at York to pick out their double-figure priced selections.

Lightly raced and relishes this track, he ticks a lot of boxes

Four of the six career starts of Roberto Escobarr have come at York. Winner of the Listed Ebor Grand Cup Stakes in June, he followed that up with a close fourth to Hukum in the Group 3 Silver Cup, both over this course and distance. He split Fujiara Prince and Away He Goes in the latter, is better off at the weights with both here yet is a similar price.

He enjoys ground on the quick side so connections will be hoping that the track doesn’t see too many showers. Good ground is fine but the good to firm the track raced on on Friday would be absolutely perfect for him. This will be his first handicap, his mark looking fair on his most recent run. He is lightly raced and relishes this track, he ticks a lot of boxes – Matthew Newman

‘He might just be a class above’

I think that the William Haggas-trained Ilaraab is the horse that they all have to beat. He is still a pretty young horse with scope for further improvement and is two from two here at York. Ilaraab looked like a Group horse when bolting up here over 1m2f in May and the runner-up Raymond Tusk went on to frank the form by finishing second in the Duke Of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot.

Sent off a 4-1 chance for the Group 2 Hardwicke last time, he didn’t give his true running but is entitled to a huge amount of respect back in handicap company for all the handicapper hasn’t been lenient on him. He might just be a class above – Adrian Wall
