Hughie Morrison has an outstanding record at Sandown so far this season. He’s yet to taste defeat with both of his runners getting their heads in front. It would appear that the dual-purpose trainer is being very selective with his runners. He sends one runner from his Berkshire base to the track on Friday and it cannot be ignored. Not So Sleepy (14-1, William Hill) is the outsider of the seven-runner field but on the best of his form, he doesn’t deserve that billing. The veteran gelding is yet to try this trip of two miles on the flat despite having raced between 1m6f and an extended 2m2f. This could end up being the perfect trip for him and he may well run a bigger race than his price suggests.
It’s fair to say it was a profitable season for him over hurdles as he dead-heated with Epatante to win the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle in November. His ninth-place finish at Royal Ascot earlier this month was probably a better effort than the finishing position suggests. That run should put him spot on for this and he should improve.
There could be more to come from him on the flat and this race looks like a good opportunity to show that. The bottom line is he looks overpriced on both his form and his trainer’s record so far this season. Combining these two factors suggests he could be worth a punt as 14-1 looks a tasty price.
