IN SUMMARY: SOME BUCKLE (11/4) clearly wasn’t himself when pulled up on his chasing debut in January but he ran well over hurdles on his previous outing and, on only his third start for Paul Nicholls, is readily given another chance to show what he can do over fences. Daveron has done well since switched to chasing this season but would make more appeal on a right-handed track and on slower ground. Deadly Sting proved he can go well fresh when making a successful debut over fences last spring, but he tends to make his jockey work hard and comes with risks attached.

1 Some Buckle – Has something to prove after very disappointing chase debut in January but the ground was heavy that day and he ran as though something was amiss; finished very respectable sixth over hurdles at Cheltenham (2m1f, soft) on penultimate outing (first run for Paul Nicholls) and could still have a good future over fences.

2 Shimla Dawn – Made pleasing start to chasing career when game winner at Carlisle (2m4f, good) in November but is yet to build on that performance and was tailed off when upped to 3m1f at Catterick last month; ought to appreciate the better ground here and is now 3lb below his winning mark, but needs to get back on track.

3 Daveron – 2-3 since switched to fences this season, the wins coming over 2m4f on soft ground at Wincanton and Ludlow; today’s faster ground probably won’t be a problem but latest 6lb rise demands further progress and this left-handed circuit may not be ideal.

4 Deadly Sting – Proved he can go well fresh when making winning stable/chase debut at Worcester (2m7f, good) in May, so subsequent break not a serious concern; open to progress in this sphere but takes on some in-form rivals here and his tendency to race lazily reduces his appeal.

5 Portway Flyer – Non-runner

6 Leanna Ban – Began chasing career with two wins last May (2m4f/2m7f, both on good ground) and comes here after reaching the frame three consecutive times this year (3m-3m1f); evidently in good heart but needs to find something extra to cope with today’s rise in class; often makes the running.
