Royal Ascot Tips

The experts at myracing have compiled a handy guide to punting smart at Royal Ascot. Follow these six rules to give yourself the best chance of backing a winner at Royal Ascot.

Be selective

Having a bet in every race is the fastest way to lose. The odds of making a profit from betting in every race are against you, so try to focus on races where you feel confident or know a bit more about the runners. For example, some punters specialise in handicaps and take the time to study each of the runners over time to gauge their true chances of winning. Others prefer sticking to the high profile group-class races where the market is usually a good guide, or two-year-old races where prolific trainers usually have an edge.

Put simply, if you’re not confident or don’t have an interest in the race, why not leave it alone and just enjoy the race for what it is. You don’t have to have a bet in every race.

Course form can be key

One thing that should always be considered in Royal Ascot tips, is previous course form.
Ascot is a conventional flat track with two courses, a round course and a straight mile, with the latter a strong test for a horse, particularly if the ground is soft.

As such, races tend to develop in particular ways, with the short straight on the round course making life tough for those held up, but on the straight course, it can often pay to come from off the pace.

With this in mind, Ascot can be a bit of a specialist track and previous course form is a major positive. At the 2018 Royal Ascot Festival of the 30 winners, 11 had either won or placed at Ascot previously, a figure enhanced when you excluded the two-year-olds races, as many would have had no opportunity to race at the track before.

Draw Bias

The Draw bias at Royal Ascot is something that most certainly deserves some attention.

With many big races during the week, with up to 24 runners, even more in a typical year, knowing where you’re horse is drawn and deciphering where the advantage is vital.

Historically it was always thought that a low draw around Ascot was beneficial, but in recent years, particularly in the big handicap, there has been a change in the tide, with high drawn horses having the most success.

The bias can change, especially on the straight course depending on conditions, so be sure to watch the earlier races to discern any track bias on that day.

Pace Angle

Alongside the draw, is the pace angle, and trying to figure out how the race will be run is a great tool in trying to find the winner.

If your horse is drawn low, typically held up for a late run but all of the speedballs are drawn high, the race may not be run to suit that selection. This is particularly pertinent in sprint handicaps where you ideally want to follow the pace before using the uphill finish to strike late.

On the round course it pays to be handy and up with the pace, Ascot’s short straight means it’s tough to make up ground late on so look for horses that may get an easy lead, before stealing a march turning for home.

Shop around for the best odds, offers and enhanced place terms

Royal Ascot is one of the most competitive weeks of racing on the track, and it’s very much the same off it with all the top bookmakers vying for favouritism. As such it is vital to shop around for the best odds on all of our Royal Ascot tips, with bookmakers trying to outdo one another to have the industry best odds.

Another popular enhancement during Royal Ascot, particularly in the big-field handicaps with the likes of the Royal Hunt Cup, Britannia Stakes and Wokingham Stakes, is enhanced place terms.

Traditionally the each-way terms in these races would pay four places, but many bookmakers will offer extra places for your each-way bets. In most instances bookmakers will enhance the place terms by one or two positions, meaning 5 or 6 places, which is already great, but you can often get up to 7 or 8 places in certain races throughout the week.

Imagine finishing 8th and still winning a bet! So make sure you shop around and take advantage of these enhanced place terms.

With the additional races, all of which are big-field handicaps, this is more important than ever in 2024. Giving you the best chance of profiting from Royal Ascot tips throughout the week.

Plenty of our daily racing tips are posted in the early evening the day before the meeting,  with the remainder going up the next morning, and that’s no different for all our Ascot tips!

Ascot is one of the premier venues for both jump racing and flat action, with plenty of specific trainers and jockeys targeting the Berkshire track. All of the key statistics for the best trainers and jockey at Ascot Racecourse can be found above.

Course Characteristics

The Flat course has a straight mile where it is not unusual for horses to come from way off the pace to lead near the finish. There is also a round course where they race over a mile and further with a two and a half furlong straight. In big fields it’s more difficult to come from far back on the round course so we take this into consideration for our tips.

The tracks for both codes are galloping in nature. The chase course has 10 fences per circuit which can be tough jumping but big, galloping types are suited by it.

Draw Bias

There isn’t a notable draw bias to consider on Ascot’s round course, with Ascot’s short home straight and being on the pace more of a factor round there.

On the straight course it can vary as to where you want to be, in recent year’s the big handicaps have favoured a higher draw, so be sure to watch the earlier races to decipher which side is favourable.

We have tips for all the major meetings at Ascot. Royal Ascot is the flag bearer on the flat, taking place in June each year with 5 days of top-class action with 8 Group 1’s throughout the week attracting the best of the best.
