Royal Ascot Day 4 Tips

Day 4 opens with the Albany Stakes. A six-furlong group 3 open to two-year-old fillies, the Albany Stakes is fast and frenetic and no stranger to a turnup with many big priced winners in recent years. One of the strongest trends in the Albany Stakes has been the draw, with eleven of the last twelve winners breaking from stall 12 or higher.

Day four continues with the Commonwealth Cup – the highlight of Royal Ascot day 4 and the sole Group 1 race on the day. Introduced in 2015 the Commonwealth is run over six furlongs and open exclusively to three-year-old horses. Fillies receive a 3lb weight allowance over colts and in seven runnings of the Commonwealth Cup, last year Campanelle became only the second filly to triumph after Quiet Reflection’s success in 2016.

The Duke of Edinburgh Handicap follows next, a 1m4f race open to horses aged three-years-old and up, a contest named after the late, great Prince Philip.

The Coronation Stakes is open to three-year-old fillies and run over a distance of one mile.

Next up at Royal Ascot is the Sandringham Stakes run over the same conditions as the Britannia Stakes, but this time open to three-year-old fillies. With the similar difficulties of a huge field size and Ascot’s straight mile, it can also be a tricky betting heat, as shown over the last few years with Hayley Turner steering home Thanks Be and Onassis (2019 and 2020 respectively). Both came home at 33/1 and she became the first female jockey to ride a winner at Royal Ascot since Gay Kellaway in 1987. Favourites have had better luck here in the last decade than in the Britannia Stakes, however, with four coming home in front priced at 4/1, 9/2, 11/4 and 11/2.

Penultimately is the King Edward VII Stakes, a Group 2 run over 1m4f for three-year-old colts.

Day four will this year have the Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes run as the final race. The 5f handicap for three-year-olds was run for the first time at the 2020 meeting where Art Power stormed to an impressive victory before winning a Group 3 and placing in two Group 1s later in the season. Significantly added his name to the roll of honour last year in a race which has proved to be popular among racegoers.
