Newton Abbot Racecourse is one of two tracks located in Devon. The straight away from the stands runs adjacent to the River Teign. Yet it was prone to winter waterlogging so a move to summer jumping breathed new life into the track just a stone’s throw from the “English Riviera”. Its location so close to Torquay means that the course is often buzzing with a holiday atmosphere, especially during its August meetings. Given its relatively small size, the viewing of the track is good. West Country trainers such as Paul Nicholls, Philip Hobbs, David Pipe and Colin Tizzard regularly visit Newton Abbot racecourse.
Newton Abbot Betting Tips
A tight left-handed oval of a little over a mile, there is a very short run in. Those who have raced handily often win races. The fences are positioned one on each short side straight, three down the back with an open ditch the last of the three and two up the straight. They are generally considered easy fences and a good starting point for a novice. As such, a trip to Newton Abbot racecourse will often offer a glimpse into a well above average type on the card. It is worth watching replays of novice races, with handicap clues often to be found for later in the season in behind the Nicholls and Pipe big guns. The track boasts an excellent cover of grass with underfoot conditions very rarely too far away from good ground which tends to encourage good sized fields.
