The Irish Oaks is a famous event which features the best middle-distance three-year-old fillies of each season and has been won by the likes of Enable, Ouija Board and more brilliant horses.

This was a procession last year for Epsom heroine Enable and this year the potential for a dual Oaks winner is very real following Forever Together‘s romp on the downs. She went into the race as a 99-rated maiden with plenty of trends against her but it didn’t make the slightest bit of difference as she streaked away from them to win by an easy four and a half lengths. She had showed a great deal of promise in her three runs before that especially when second in the Cheshire Oaks behind a stablemate. She is a beautifully bred filly who has taken a leap forward on each start and it wouldn’t be any surprise if she completed an Oaks double here.

It is difficult to see any of those in behind reversing the form as it looked to be a case of a talented winner beating a very average Oaks field. Wild Illusion was a distant and well beaten second that day and although she was keen it would take much more than settling better to get the better of the winner here. She was a good fourth in the Guineas and was a Group 1 winning two-year-old but looked well outclassed last time and a similar story is likely if the rivalry is renewed here.

It may be wiser to look for threats from fillies that didn’t run in the English equivalent and the first one to jump off the page is Lah Ti Dar. She was a strong antepost favourite for the Oaks following her dominant Pretty Polly win but was ruled out of the contest due to injury and looks as if she is being aimed at Royal Ascot instead. She has been weak in the market for the Ribblesdale however and connections may choose to give her extra time in which case she would come into the reckoning here. She has looked very exciting in her two starts to date and is bred to be high-class so her presence here would be extremely interesting.

Last year’s Fillies’ Mile winner Laurens has already enjoyed a good season, she was second in the English Guineas before winning the Prix Alary at Longchamp in gritty fashion. She may well be aimed at the Prix Diane on her next start but has always looked as if she would make a classy middle-distance prospect and has plenty of form which would entitle her to a big shout her if Karle Burke decided to take this route.

William Haggas looked to have a proper filly on his hands in the shape of Sea Of Class when she stretched away from a Listed field to break her maiden in style at Newbury. She dodged the English Oaks as her trainer felt inexperience may hinder her chances at such a tricky track but she’d be a contender if coming here. She was very well backed when just missing out through greenness on debut and the market support was telling before her breakthrough success. She does everything easily and seems to have a great deal of untapped potential, she could become a star in what looks an open enough division.
