The Irish Derby has been won by some top class horses and produced a thriller last year with subequent St. Leger winner Capri edging out Champion Stakes winner Cracksman and English Derby hero Wings Of Eagles. There is always the potential for a high class horse to be seen in this race and this year the obvious starting point is with Masar who ended Godolphin’s drought in the Derby with an emphatic success. He had some good two-year-old form which included a defeat of Irish Guineas winner Romanised and looked a very good horse when hacking up in the Greenham by nine lengths. He was beaten when favourite for the Guineas but relished the step up in trip at Epsom and was well on top at the line, he’ll be hard to beat.

It is difficult to say whether or not disappointing Derby favourite Saxon Warrior was beaten by stamina when losing his unbeaten record to Masar but he was over four lengths behind the eventual winner regardless. He had a poor draw and was possibly not suited by the track but he will still need to bounce back in some style if he is to turn out that form. This race has been left open by Aidan O’Brien as an option as well as the Eclipse and it’ll be interesting to see which engagement he takes up. He was a hugely exciting horse and can’t be written off as he looked a real star when taking the Guineas and would take some beating if running to that form over this trip.

Expensive Frankel colt Wadilsafa made a promising start behind the highly regarded Herculean at Ascot as a two-year-old and comprehensively reversed the form on his seasonal debut this year. He is bred to suit a step up in trip and the fact Owen Burrows gives him an entry here is a tip in itself as he clearly thinks the horse has the potential to be very good. He is bred to be high class and has looked exciting so far, this is a massive step up in class but he is an interesting type.

Plenty of horses detest running around Epsom and William Haggas’ Young Rascal looked to be one of those types when finishing seventh in the Derby. He was an easy winner of a Newbury maiden before taking the Chester Vase in good style but hated every minute of the camber. He was beaten just under seventeen lengths so clearly has a great deal to find with Masar but he was well fancied before that race and could be a completely different horse away from Epsom. The Curragh is a much more forgiving track and he could be much more at home here which would see him back in the picture.

Dermot Weld doesn’t waste his entries and the presence of impressive maiden winner Broad Street at this stage is something to note. He was taking on some more experienced horses with some fair form on his debut but was backed as if defeat was out of the question and quickened in stylish fashion to put the race to be in a couple of strides. He looks very talented and is clearly well regarded so also comes into the picture in a race which really has only one standout contender following some bubbles being burst in the English equivalent.
