The handicapper seems to have the measure of plenty of these so it may be best look for one with potential to source the winner. VERSTAPPEN (Each Way) fits the bill for the in-form Marco Botti yard, and as he looks sure to be far better now he has been sent handicapping a big run is eagerly anticipated.

J: Josephine Gordon T: Marco Botti
Marco Botti has his Newmarket string in good form with two winners from just the six recent runners and he will be hoping to get a win out of the son of Dark Angel sooner rather than later. So far he hasn’t shown too much in his three runs for a handicap mark with a seven length fourth over the Kempton mile last time out in September but expected to be far better as a three-year-old on breeding and a big big player now.
J: Charles Bishop T: Mick Channon
Last seen in October on turf running on over the Nottingham mile on soft ground to finish a two and three-quarter length third to Ruysch off a rating of 69. Up a pound here after nearly five months off but gelded in the break and may well be a better prospect now if the operation brings any improvement.
Surrey Blaze
J: Oisin Murphy T: Joseph Tuite
Three wins in a row this year here over eight and a half furlongs and then twice at Chelmsford over a mile and a quarter in February. Upped in class here and with an added eight pounds from the handicapper for his last two length success the handicapper may have him in his sights now though he is the clear form option on recent efforts even if he does need to pull out even more to make it four on the bounce.
J: Jamie Parkes T: Martyn Meade
Martyn Meade sends him in to handicap company after just the three career starts in maidens with a fourth a third, and a fifth, all at Lingfield and twice over a mile and a quarter with his last start over a mile. No good thing here he may well have more to offer and if that is the case, a rating of 75 could prove generous in the long term with Jamie Parkes taking seven pounds off his back this evening which can only help.
Battle Lines
J: Luke Morris T: James Tate
Three frustrating races in a row now for the James Tate colt with a third at Newcastle and two runners up spots here over this course and distance and then over the mile and half a furlong when staying on to be beaten a length at the line. Up two pounds for that bold effort, but dropped in class tonight and looks a major player in this line-up.
Poetic Steps
J: P. J. McDonald T: Mark Johnston
Mark Johnston has had plenty of winners already in 2018 as is the way with the yard, though the daughter of Poet’s Voice hasn’t been seen since finishing twenty-sixth of twenty-eight in a far better race on the Newmarket turf last October. Down two pounds for that she should do a lot better upped to this trip as a three-year-old and the stable can never be discounted in this type of event, leaving her as possible each way material with the excellent P J McDonald in the saddle.
We Are The World
J: Daniel Tudhope T: Archie Watson
Archie Watson is a trainer we will all hear a lot more of over the months and years ahead, and he has decided to add first time blinkers to the gelded son of diminutive Derby winner Sir Percy who won his penultimate race of 2017 over the Kempton mile but failed to build on that when only sixth in a nursery over the same course and distance in September. Off since, he has his first run as a three-year-old today for a stable in good form with five winners in the last two weeks for a 33% strike rate and if he improves for the step up in trip then he may well be able to get involved in the finish off two pounds lower here.
