Tips for Churchill Downs Races

Located in south Louisville, Kentucky in the United States, Churchill Downs was opened in 1875 and is the home of the world famous Kentucky Derby. The venue has hosted the renowned Breeders’ Cup on eight occasions and will be doing so for the ninth time in 2018.

Course: There are two tracks at Churchill Downs, the Dirt is on the outside with a circuit of a mile. The turf course is on the inside and is only seven furlongs in distance. That is shorter than most UK tracks and the turns are therefore tighter so poses a different challenge to European horses. We need our tips to be able to handle the sharp bends.

Draw Bias: Because a turn is never far away, we prefer our tips to be drawn in the low-middle numbers for turf races. Those drawn wide can find it difficult to gain a good position from the gate. On the dirt, an inside draw can prove costly if missing the break even a little. Middle-high is better as there is less chance of kick-back.

Feature Races: No doubting that the feature contest at Churchill Downs is the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the American Triple Crown in May. The Breeders’ Cup is at the venue in 2018 which consists of 14 Grade 1 races which attracts the best horses from around the world. Our Breeders’ Cup tips are on site!
