Charles Byrnes seldom if ever has set foot at Yarmouth Racecourse with a runner so it has to be very interesting that the yard sends two over to take on a pair of valuable handicaps live on ITV Racing on Thursday evening. The form of the Byrnes stable has to be a concern as in the 2023/24 season to date, they have registered just one victory from 47 runners over jumps and two winners from 22 runners on the Flat. Nonetheless, Byrnes wouldn’t send one to Britain just for the fun of it!
Kendancer is the first of the Byrnes runners and this boy will take his chance in the Class 3 Racing League handicap over 1m6f. He was far from disgraced when ninth of 16 at the Curragh over two miles when last seen, beaten just over five lengths, and can race off the very same mark here in Britain. It would be no surprise if this horse was well ahead of his current mark and with all Byrnes runners, the market will tell a lot of the story so keep an eye out for the sea of blue on Oddschecker.
In the final race, the Class 2 Racing League handicap over 1m2f, Byrnes’ final runner of the night is Old Port, who will be partnered by Ben Curtis. This son of The Gurkha won six times when trained by David Evans in Britain, and he went into many a notebook when probably an unlucky loser at the Curragh this month, badly hampered when making a move and eventually having to settle for sixth. He could make amends here.
