We’re being treated to some excellent racing action on Wednesday and the main event is the Kerry National at Listowel, which we have previewed. Gordon Elliott is sending one runner over to Perth for their feature race and Patrick Mullins will attempt to defend his 100 per cent strike-rate at Listowel this season. Galway Plate winner King Alexander heads the field and the Willie Mullins-trained gelding is still lightly raced over fences. There’s plenty of scope for improvement and an 8lb rise could be manageable. Stablemate Funiculi Funicula also lines up and he will be popular, with Paul Townend on board.
Jack Kennedy rides Nowwhatdoyouthink landed a Grade 3 for previous connections and was third behind Western Fold in a Punchestown Grade 1. Fourth in the Galway Plate, it would be dangerous to rule him out. Downmexicoway brings some fair form to the table and three miles will suit him well.
Don’t rule out Gavin Cromwell’s Will The Wise, who won the Topham Chase at the Aintree Festival, and the best is yet to come from Kings Hill over fences. A couple of big outsiders who could be a little overpriced, Perceval Legallois and You Oughta Know both have some strong form in the book.
Boston Rover won three times over fences last term, most notably a competitive handicap at Gowran back in October. His form has been a little underwhelming in two starts so far this season but the handicapper is beginning to respond and this race looks significantly easier.
Leading amateur rider Patrick Mullins came out on top on his only previous ride at Listowel so far this season and he will be on board the Thomas Cooper-trained New Grange in the concluding bumper. He bolted up in a point-to-point at Ballygogue House and could be one to follow under rules.
