‘Unbelievably he can still be backed at 25-1’ – Trainer confident of huge Ascot run 🗣

Hugo Palmer in celebratory mood

David Carr of the Racing Post caught up with the northern’s top trainers to discuss their top contenders at Royal Ascot next week. You can read the piece on the Racing Post if you are a member.

It is fascinating insight into some of the main protagonists running next week, but one comment in particular caught our attention. When he spoke with trainer Hugo Palmer, he seemed glowingly confident about one runner in particular.

Before we move on to that horse below, make sure you follow myracing.com for expert Royal Ascot tips, previews and analysis each and every day of the meeting.

Commonwealth Cup

The horse that Hugo Palmer is giving a proper chance to runs in the Commonwealth Cup on Friday the 17th of June and is called Flaming Rib. It is a Group 1 sprint race over 6f and it certainly takes a proper speedball with a bit of stamina in the locker to win it.

Palmer was quoted saying: “He’s come out of Haydock very well and it was a great run there. If we’d been drawn near the winner, there’s a possibility the result might have been different. Unbelievably he can still be backed at 25-1 and that’s a big price.”

Flaming Rib won four races on the bounce between July and October last year, winning handicaps at Thirsk, York and Chester before scooping up a Listed prize at Doncaster on heavy ground at the end of the season.

He is certainly ground versatile having won on fast and soft ground, and his form this year has been solid. Not only did he defeat King’s Lynn at Chester in May, who has since gone on to win a Group 2, but he was an unlucky loser in the Sandy Lane at Haydock last time.
