Brighton‘s six-race card on Tuesday isn’t of the highest quality and consequently the prize money is nothing to shout about. With that in mind, it’s interesting that two Yorkshire-based trainers are sending three runners down to the south coast on Monday. Philip Kirby sends two runners on a 598-mile round trip and Charlie Johnston sends one on a 506-mile journey. We’ve combined these three runners into a 205-1 treble. Nothern Chancer (10-1, bet365) is an 11-race maiden who clearly needs to find some improvement in order to feature here. Philip Kirby’s gelding drops back into Classified Stakes company here and this level is likely to provide him with his best chance of getting off the mark. Billy Loughnane is on board and his 3lb claim will be hugely valuable here.
The African Queen (4-1, bet365) makes her debut for Charlie Johnston in the 7f maiden. There’s plenty of stamina in her pedigree and her dam won three times between 1m2f and 1m4f for Mark Johnston. This looks like a winnable four-runner event and if she’s forward enough on debut, could quickly shed her maiden tag. Charlie Johnston has a 33 per cent strike rate, with one winner from three runners at Brighton so far this season.
Willing To Please (11-4, bet365) knows how to win, having done so three times during his career. The last of those came at Carlisle in August and he was a solid second in a similar race to this at Ayr last time out. Winning this race certainly isn’t beyond him and connections will want some compensation for the long journey down from Yorkshire.
