It’s trials day at Cheltenham on Saturday and five of the eight races will be live on ITV. They will be joined by three races from Doncaster, including the Great Yorkshire Chase, and it should be an exciting afternoon. ITV racing means outsiders, so we’ve selected four potentially overpriced runners to look out for and they include 25/1, 20/1, 18/1 and 16/1 picks. The Last Cloud (16/1, bet365) has won three times over hurdles and probably deserves another chance in graded company with that in mind. His third behind Idaho Sun and Mydaddypaddy in the Formby last time out looks solid and the fourth was an impressive winner the other day. Provided the return to three miles suits, he could outrun his price by some way.
Boombawn (20/1, Boylesports) has been running in graded races recently so this task should be much easier. Dan Skelton’s gelding wasn’t beaten far when third in the Silviniaco Conti Chase at Kempton earlier this month and a similar performance is likely to put him bang in the mix.
Annual Invictus (25/1, Boylesports) is a strong stayer and he ran a cracker to finish second by a neck in the bet365 Gold Cup in 2024. His last success came off this very mark in the Great Yorkshire Chase that year and a spin on the Cross Country course could revitalise the 11-year-old.
Joyeux Machin (18/1, bet365) placed in several competitive handicap hurdles last season and wasn’t disgraced over course and distance last time out, where he finished fourth. The handicapper has dropped him a couple of pounds since and a return to winning ways shouldn’t be ruled out.
