‘The sky’s the limit’ – 14-1 Paddy Power shot gunning for gold on Saturday 🏆

The Paddy Power Gold Cup takes place at Cheltenham on Saturday. It’s one of the most valuable and prestigious handicaps on the calendar as well as always being a good spectacle. There’s a significant Irish challenge this year but the race could go to the home team yet again. Liam Bramall has gone for a 14-1 shot that looks well placed to go for glory. Venetia Williams looks likely to run a fascinating contender in the shape of Frero Banbou. A terrifically consistent horse, he almost always runs his race. Ran below his own standards at Aintree in the Spring which could be put down to being over the top. It seems likely that he had a hard race in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham before that which would have taken plenty out of him. He ran a cracker at Cheltenham, finishing third in an energy-sapping affair on very soft ground.

Stepping up in trip could be the key to this horse. He keeps on well at the end of two miles but sometimes lacks the turn of foot which some two-milers possess. This step up in trip is a long time coming and it could enable him to fulfil his potential. A rating of 142 is no walk in the park but the extra distance is likely to unlock a few pounds of improvement. The sky’s the limit over this new trip.

Frero Banbou ran a nice race behind Thyme White at Ascot last month. As per usual, he was keeping on and he should feel the benefit here of having that run under his belt. Having finished third on both starts at Cheltenham, you would like to think he could convert that into a first here.
