‘The risk outweighs the reward’ – Three favourites to avoid at Royal Ascot

Royal Ascot is just around the corner now and we have five days of excellent action to look forward to. The betting will undoubtedly be competitive and it’s highly unlikely that all the favourites will win. With this in mind, we’ve picked out three favourites that are well worth taking on at the Royal meeting. Check out our free tips page where you can find tips for every race at Royal Ascot.

St James’s Palace Stakes

Notable Speech (11/8) didn’t make his debut until January and it’s fair to say that Charlie Appleby’s colt is a rapid improver. He took a huge step forward to win the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and is entitled to continue progressing. That being said, he looks opposable at some very short odds especially as there some very viable alternatives. Henry Longfellow could be worth taking him on with as he was a very good juvenile who should take a big step forward from his last run.

Queen’s Vase

Highbury (9/4) was a very impressive winner of his maiden when last seen but he faces a substantial step up in grade here. He only made his debut in April and has a lot to learn about racing in this grade. Aidan O’Brien’s colt may well be good enough but he’s certainly worth taking on at this sort of price. Stablemate Grosvenor Square appeals more, as does Derby fifth Sayedaty Sadaty.

Prince of Wales’s Stakes

Auguste Rodin (9/4) was undeniably a fantastic horse at two and three and possesses a vast wealth of ability. He hasn’t quite looked like the same horse so far this season and was bitterly disappointing when beaten in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. The risk of backing him outweighs the rewards of doing so on that evidence and his last time out conqueror White Birch should head the market.
