‘The bias is extreme’ – four tips for a low draw Lucky 15 at Chester on Wednesday 🏇

Chester has an extreme draw bias and it’s very difficult to overcome. This is why you’ll often see a flurry of non-runners after the draw has been made. Those drawn on the outside are often beaten before the race even starts and therefore it’s make or break. With this in mind, we’ve picked out four runners on Day 1 of Chester’s May Festival on Wednesday who should be massively advantaged by their low draw. 1.30 Chester

Ziggy’s Phoenix was a smooth winner at Ripon last time out and benefitted from her previous experience at Kempton. She was perhaps a little unlucky on debut, as she didn’t get the cleanest of passages through and wasn’t beaten very far in the end. Richard Hannon’s filly is clearly talented and if taking another step forward here, she can go all the way from stall one.

2.40 Chester

Luckin Brew also has the inside draw, for Ralph Beckett and Frankie Dettori. She was just denied by a Charlie Appleby colt in a Pontefract Listed race when last seen and the horse who finished fourth in the 1000 Guineas was back in third that day. There’s evidence in her pedigree that this trip will suit, as her full sister won a Group 3 over 1m4f.

3.45 Chester

Royal Dress ran out an impressive winner at Doncaster on his seasonal reappearance and he confirmed his status as a progressive horse. He makes his handicap debut here and this opening mark of 80 looks pretty reasonable on that evidence. Ryan Moore is booked to take the ride and he should go well from stall three.

4.55 Chester

Broken Spear returned to form with a much improved effort at Leicester last time out. The handicapper probably didn’t need to put him up 2lb for that run but he should run his race nonetheless. His record here at Chester is solid, with a win, a second and a third in four starts. It’s imperative that he breaks well as there will be plenty of candidates that are willing to take his position next to the rail.
