Chester‘s three-day May Festival concludes on Friday and five of their eight races will be live on ITV. There are plenty of runners on the day and that means lots of opportunities for an each-way play. The highlight of the day is the £170,000 Chester Cup and we have three outsiders for you to consider, including a 16/1 chance in the main event. This 7f handicap is set to be a competitive affair and every pound could count. That is why Richard Fahey’s Master Zoffany (16/1, bet365) could be the one to go with here. His four starts in 2024 have been a little underwhelming but that has resulted in a slip down the weights. The gelding’s last victory came off this mark at Newcastle in December and he’s a three-time course winner who’s capable of surprising a few here.
Woodstock City (25/1, Betfair) won twice in France and has perhaps struggled with his mark in four British starts. The handicapper is beginning to relent however and he’s now down to a mark of 81, which is 10lb lower than his initial rating. Ian Williams’ four-year-old has been gelded since his latest run and he’ll be competitive again sooner rather than later.
Solent Gateway (16/1, bet365) was disappointing in this race back in 2022 but he stays well and deserves another chance. Hugo Palmer’s gelding has been a bit out of form so far this season but this is a good opportunity to get back on track. Currently rated 1lb lower than his last winning mark, an improved effort could be on the agenda. Stall 5 is a nice low draw and there will be no excuses from there.
