There has been significant rain at Doncaster Racecourse during the week ahead of Saturday’s Futurity Trophy Stakes Day card and we have delved into the races to assess who will be favoured by the testing conditions. Although one of the outsiders, Adrian Keatley’s Francisco’s Piece will definitely handle underfoot conditions and he might outrun his odds. A winner on his debut at Pontefract on soft ground, he has placed the last three times on ground with ease, including when third on heavy at Deauville in Listed company latest. He won’t be far away again. He has to improve to beat a couple of these for sure but he’s not discounted.
Gemma Tutty has a good chance of landing another nice handicap pot with Blue Storm. The son of Blue Point is another who won on soft ground on his debut when trained by James Tate, and he thrived in testing conditions when winning a tough Haydock handicap off 99 last month. This is tougher from 5lb higher but he will go on the ground and James Doyle is an eyecatching jockey booking.
Onto the big one now and it’s a great chance for Aidan O’Brien’s Delacroix to show what he’s made of. The Curragh maiden winner improved for softer ground when winning the Group 3 Autumn Stakes at Newmarket last time, showing real determination to come out on top. He will improve for a step up in trip next year for sure but he could be a tough nut to pass here especially if he’s handed a soft lead.
