‘She’ll take some beating’ – Irish raider sent on 789-mile round trip to Newmarket ⛴️

Kieran Cotter isn’t exactly a household name in Irish racing but his runner at Newmarket on Friday could be significant. It’s no short journey from his base in County Laois to Newmarket so she’s not coming to make up the numbers. The 789-mile round trip will be a costly one which means connections will be looking for compensation. This runner has some excellent form in the book and she’ll take some beating. 2.40 Newmarket

Matilda Picotte (10-3, William Hill) has had five career starts so far and is yet to disappoint. Kieran Cotter’s filly has been highly tried since winning on debut and has always acquitted herself well. Her debut effort showed significant promise when winning at the Curragh. Comhra finished second that day and boosted the form by winning next time out. Badb and Tiger Paw have also won since and finished ninth and sixth respectively.

Two very difficult tasks then followed when up against some exceptional Ballydoyle inmates in Group 3 and Group 2 company. Both efforts were more than respectable and she was less than two lengths behind in each. She would perhaps have been expected to win a valuable auction race on her next start when finishing second. A subsequent Group 3 winner was behind her that day, giving some substance to that effort.

Matilda Picotte ran well to finish third in the Lowther Stakes at York last time out and is dropped into Listed class here. Her rock solid form has propelled her to the top of the market at time of writing. Not only is the drop in grade significant, this isn’t the deepest race for the level and it’s hard to look past her.
