Shark Hanlon sends two on the 698-mile round trip to Southwell on Tuesday

It’s expensive to get horses to the races these days and it’s therefore significant when a trainer sends their runners on a particularly long trip. County Carlow-based Shark Hanlon sends two runners on the 698-mile round trip to Southwell on Tuesday so we’ve assessed the horses’ chances.

Hanlon is 0/8 at the track so far and he will be looking to get one (or two) on the board. His son Paddy is set to take both rides and will take 7lb off. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

2.15 Southwell

Brown Monday is yet to win in 11 starts over hurdles and fences and the closest he has come was a nine-length second in a Roscommon beginners chase. He was in the process of running another fair race at the same track when last seen over hurdles. An unfortunate fall at the last prevented connections from earning any place prize money.

The seven-year-old ran in two hunter chases upon his return after a lengthy absence and showed very little, including when pulling up at the Punchestown Festival. There were some more positive signs on show in handicap company at Limerick last time and he’s no forlorn hope if building on that effort.

3.15 Southwell

Silver Pageant makes her debut in a bumper for fillies and mares and the market may provide the best clues where she’s concerned. The four-year-old receives a 5lb allowance and that could be significant when combined with her jockey’s claim.

This £1,000 purchase has some decent Flat form in her pedigree as her dam is related to an Oaks runner-up as well as a Listed winner. It’s certainly not out of the question that she could win this on that evidence and Hanlon’s filly shouldn’t be ruled out.
