The Scottish Grand National takes place the week before the English equivalent this year and the big race takes place on Saturday at Ayr. This is a good race for outsiders with winners at 25-1, 33-1, 25-1 and 40-1 in the last 10 years. Evidently you shouldn’t be discouraged from backing horses at big prices here and I’ve selected one at a huge price who can outrun his odds.
Trainer John McConnell has a 28 per cent strike-rate in the last five years with his runners in Britain. He’s a regular raider of the Scottish and border tracks and this season has been his most successful with 11 winners here. McConnell could have two runners but it’s Go Another One that is of most interest.
This 10-year-old gelding absolutely needs decent ground. As long the going is no worse than good-to-soft he should have no problem with the conditions. His British chase mark is the same as when he last won over fences at Perth in September.
Go Another One is a really strong stayer and he could be suited by a combination of this marathon trip of the best part of four miles and nice ground. Having finished a staying-on fourth to Yala Enki over an extended 3m3f at Cheltenham in November one would hope that the new trip will suit. He was outpaced between two and three out that day and the extra distance would help with that.
Last time out over hurdles he finished fourth at Musselburgh. That run was satisfactory enough and should put him spot on for this having missed the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham. The ground at Cheltenham was completely unsuitable as a consequence of the day-long deluge on the Wednesday.
