Ralph Beckett sends one runner on the 800-mile round trip to Ayr on Sunday

It’s fair to say that Ayr isn’t exactly a local track for Hampshire-based trainer Ralph Beckett, as the Scottish track is 400 miles away. You can therefore see why he’s yet to have a runner there so far this season but that is set to change on Sunday. Beckett sends one runner on the 800-mile round trip to Ayr and this could be significant, so we’ve assessed the chances of the horse in question. 3.30 Ayr

Ayr’s feature race is the Class 3 Summer Mile, a handicap for three-year-olds and upwards. Ralph Beckett runs The Outlaw and the colt is progressing very well in handicap company. He showed very little in three starts at two but has gone from strength to strength this year.

Getting off the mark with an impressive handicap success at Chelmsford in January, he was far too good for his rivals that day. The Outlaw pulled clear to score by just shy of three lengths and followed up in similar fashion at Kempton after that.

His winning run was ended with a below par effort at Ripon in April but that effort did come off the back of a short break. Returning to the winners’ enclosure next time, he won nicely at Carlisle, with Jack Dace taking 7lb off. The apprentice retains the ride here and his claim will undoubtedly be a big help.

The handicapper responded to his latest success with a 6lb rise and the son of New Bay has climbed 19lb up the handicap already this season. Life will obviously be harder here with that in mind but he could be worth keeping on side until his limitations are exposed.
